What is the Wine Sentiment Index?
The Wine Sentiment Index (WSI) is a novel quality score for wine cuvées — built exclusively on what passionate amateurs say about how wines taste, stripped of any price, prestige, or critic bias.
Traditional wine scores — Parker points, Wine Spectator ratings — come with invisible weights: the reputation of the producer, the price tier of the bottle, the critic's palate shaped by thousands of professional tastings. WSI removes all of that. What remains is the unfiltered voice of people who drink wine because they love it.
The Methodology
Amateur reviews only
Source data comes exclusively from tasting notes written by the members of LaPassionDuVin.com — France's largest wine enthusiast community, home to 23+ years of French-language amateur tasting experience. No professional critics. No importers. No sponsored content.
Price sentences are removed
Before any analysis, a price/value filter (RQP filter) strips every sentence that references cost, value, price, or price-to-quality ratio. WSI scores what the wine tastes like — not whether it's worth the money.
Dual-layer French NLP
Price-purged text is scored using a combination of a wine-specific French sentiment lexicon and a fine-tuned French language model. The two signals are blended into a per-review `wsi_raw_score` between 0 and 100.
Two public scores
We publish a vintage score (WSI-V) for a specific vintage when at least 2 reviews exist, and a lifetime cuvée score (WSI-C) across all vintages when at least 3 reviews exist.
Minimum threshold & confidence
Confidence is denominator-driven: Low at 2–4 reviews, Medium at 5–14, High at 15+. We always show the review count alongside the score so you can judge the signal strength.
Score Tiers
Exceptional — a wine the community consistently admires
Very good — well regarded with real character
Decent — enjoyable but opinions are divided
The Permanent Free Promise
WSI scores will always be free to look up. No paywalls, no account required, no ads in exchange for scores. That's not a marketing line — it's a structural commitment.
The source data comes from a generous public community. The least we can do is give the insights back freely.
Radical Transparency
This project is built by a single wine enthusiast — not a startup, not a corporation. There are no investors, no growth targets, no exit strategy.
What we use: Public tasting notes (CRs) from LaPassionDuVin.com forum. We analyse the sentiment expressed about the taste of wine — raw text is never stored.
What we don't do: Store personal data, track users, sell data, accept sponsored placements, or include affiliate links that influence scores.
